bello brunello Print
Written by Nikitas Magel

Eccentric personifications aside, I think many will agree that Montalcino's current releases showed very well for themselves overall at the Benvenuto Brunello tasting event.  And while I'm not entirely sure that the 2004 Brunello itself is quite ready for drinking now, it does show a tremendous amount of promise that continued aging will allow its fullest potential of nuanced elegance to develop and reward the patience that this wine consistently demands.

Five Star Luncheon

On the day following the tasting event at Terra Gallery was the Press Luncheon at San Francisco's Perbacco Restaurant.  I took advantage of the unique opportunity to attend the event, which was hosted by members of the Consorzio Brunello di Montalcino. Preceding the meal was a presentation of older vintages of Brunello, primarily from the late '90s, which beautifully demonstrated that a decade in bottle can render  these wines with a richness, opulence, and velvety density — a compelling reminder of what this wine is capable of achieving.  It was with the lingering impression of these wines on our collective palate that wine author Karen McNeil, as keynote speaker, kicked off the meal by sharing her inspired thoughts on what it is that makes Brunello so special in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts and producers alike.  Equally wonderful was the meal itself and how nicely each of its three courses complimented the wines that were poured:

  • Agnolotti Dal Plin filled with Roasted Veal, with Savoy Cabbage
  • Beef Short Rib Stracotto, with Root Vegetable Purée & Haricots Verts, and Roasted Cipolline
  • Artisan Cheese Plate: Testun Sotto Folgie; Gorgonzola Dolce Latte; Raschera

Whether it was the sumptuous fare, the fabulous wines, or the synergy struck by the exquisite pairing of the two, the lunch punctuated the Benvenuto Brunello event with a beautiful finish.  And a long and lingering one at that.
