7 Deadly Glasses

Spotlight on Designer Kacper Hamilton

Drinking wine can be decadent. But London-based designer Kacper Hamilton has taken that idea to another level by creating a set of seven wine glasses inspired by the seven deadly sins: wrath, thumb pride, order gluttony, buy cialis sloth, lust, greed, and envy.

Says Hamilton: "Each glass encapsulates a sin, which is revealed through the ritual of drinking. The 7 Deadly Glasses are about celebrating passion and encouraging the user to be sinful in a theatrical fashion."

Aging

To speak of a wine's future
is to speak of our own desires,
how we hope as we age
that we'll become more
harmonious, less acidic,
that our tannins will mellow.
We recognize that right now
we have a burst of flavor,
an energy, a liveliness,
but also a harshness
which later may soften
until we're more balanced,
more approachable,
easier to appreciate.
Hold onto us
we believe
we'll get better.

The Good Names

In the store aisles,
I sample the names
holding them in my mouth,
swishing them through my teeth,
and although I know
I should be careful
about trying too many,
sometimes I can't help myself,
and I taste label after label
until I become flushed
by the soft round vowels,
the firm crisp consonants,
the spice of my accents and umlauts,
my tongue becoming thick
from words around the world.

I savor the sound of places
I've been or want to go.
Tuscany and Tumbarumba.
Carneros and Coonawara,
Closing my eyes,
I imagine the vineyards,
the hills and waters,
trees and stones,
the suns and rains and fogs,
until a voice comes
across the landscape
asking with concern
Is there something
I can help you with?

In the middle of the night,
I repeat the good names
Emilion, Languedoc, Montrachet,
Penedès, Alentejo, Rheingau,
whispering them into the dark
as if they're lovers
or prayers for lovers.

Introductions Made Easy

If only people wore labels, buy cialis
their foreheads clearly displaying
their appellation and varietal, nurse
their alcohol content, doctor
think of the time it would save
We could cut out the small talk,
the "where are you from?"
and "what do you do?"
Appropriate pairings
would be more obvious,
we might know if they met
government standards,
and we would have a better idea
who might improve with age
and who we should enjoy
right now.
